On Death and Dying

Recently, my close friend's grandfather passed away, which made me think a lot on death. So what is death? Is it some kind of transition of the so-called souls from a material world to a world of spiritual bliss? Is it something like a butterfly shedding its cocoon on its way to becoming something purer, much more beautiful?

It is said that death is but a covered bridge leading from light to light, through a brief darkness. We have life on one side and eternal bliss on the other. Everyone is born on this planet destined to fulfill a mission.. a purpose as some might put it. And for a man who has done his duty, death is just a long, natural sleep for him.

But there's another way of looking at it. Death is not the greatest loss in life. We dont even know whether there's another world out there waiting for our souls after they leave our oh-so-mortal bodies. Maybe when we die here, we are born in a different world, in a different time, at a different place... or maybe not. But the greatest loss is what dies inside us when we are alive. The celebration.. of being alive. How we tend to take things for granted. What if today was our last day on this planet.. Our concern must be to actually live while we're alive.

But unfortunately it's usually very late when we truly understand that our time on earth is very limited.. that we have no way of knowing that our time is up.. it might very well be today or 10 years down the lane.. who knows? It is only in such situations do we start living our life to the fullest.. as if each day were the last and the only one we had.. as if there will be no tomorrow. Some people have had the misfortune of not realising this fact at any point of their lives. People just want to earn shitloads of money, all of which they'll end up spending on treatment of their ailments that they suffer because of burnouts. Finally, they end up dying lonely and unsatisfied.

Sigh.. what has this world come to.. Quote of the day

Every man dies, but not every man really lives.

As E Cummings pointed out, the most wasted of all days is the one without laughter. And so here are a few funny lines which I happened to find on a medical student's blog

A Short History of Medicine
2000 B.C. - "Here, eat this root."
1000 B.C. - "That root is heathen, say this prayer."
1850 A.D. - "That prayer is superstition, drink this potion."
1940 A.D. - "That potion is snake oil, swallow this pill."
1985 A.D. - "That pill is ineffective, take this antibiotic."

2000 A.D. - "That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root

lol..
Celebrating life.. This is the optimist reporting from the netherworld.. over and out.

P.S: Well, I have never seen either of my grandfathers and in those terms you are lucky. Dont cry because it's over, laugh because it happened.. and this is for you..

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a 1,000 winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sun on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled light
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there; I did not die.

ok dude.. will see to it that I dont repeat it in da future coz I hate making you go senti :P
I tried to be as philosophical as possible.. Actually by netherworld, I meant todays world, because most of the people here dont appreciate the fact thet they are still alive. Most of them just want to accumulate heaps of cash until one day when they realise that they cant take it with them once they die, by when they would be past 50 or 60.. whereas others sit and crib about their lives.. Lets not get into details because that would amount to a post in itself.

Ma gramma used to say ... it depends on ur deeds ... if u've been a good human being all ur life ... u get to rest up there (o O where?) and if not ... well .. then u're sent back to the earth... as a human being again or mebbe some animal ...

Wat do u have to say? I dont really know whether to believe it or not...

12:01 PM
Blogger The optimist from utopia said...

@cheesy:
I dont believe in being a good human being so that I can be up there. And I dont find any reason to believe it. We dont need reasons to be good people.. Helping fellow beings to cope with their misery gives a new purpose to my life. What happens later will happen.. whether I stay up there or I'll be sent bak on a new purpose is immaterial.. at least for me..
I am not worried about my immediate future.. *ok maybe I am* but what happens to me after death?? no no.. thats thinking too far..

Have you heard of the phrase "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise".. Well I go to bed in the "early" hours of the morning, although I am not very early to rise. So I get to be wise.. Dont aske me bout the other 2.. Some things are better left unsaid.

awwwwwwww that was a touching post and a very encouraging one too...wow u write from ur heart, I admire that...

To me death is just the end of physical functions...if u lived a good life loving and caring for people u knew, then u would leave that Love behind...u dun die...just the body only. But like u said if u lived a selfish life earing money and losing ppl, then when u die, no one will miss ur presence...and nothing will be left behind except the misery that u were...

** or maybe not. But the greatest loss is what dies inside us when we are alive.

so true! 100% agreed...so many ppl just exist...dun live life to the fullest. And that doesnt mean having loads of money, houses, cars and partying...it's abt living this very moment happily...w.o. worrying abt wut the other man has and what u dun have...

Great post mate - loved every bit of it!

Very well written da..profound:)
I remember one quote by Mark Twain that said:

All say, "How hard it is that we have to die" - a strange complaint to come from the mouths of people who have had to live.

And another good one tat i came across recently:

The idea is to die young as late as possible - Ashley Montagu

Looking for answers for years and years? I think THAT is the essence of life..u got it dude:)
We all work towards finding a purpose to our lives, the goal may or may not be achieved(I say it will cos i'm an opti), but it's the search that makes the journey that much more enjoyable.
Death is intriguing, but Life is Here and Now, so just Live..so we can pride ourselves on a job well done.
